Lord and Lady Boothroyd are the proud owners of Boothroyd Hall which has been in the family for three hundred years. When Lady Boothroyd learns that a
planned bypass will cut through the Boothroyd land, she decides to take matters into her own hands and threatens to ‘do herself in as soon as the first sod is turned’. She is not taken seriously by most of the family who endeavour to dissuade her, even enlisting the help of the local vicar.
