FROM SCULPTURE TO PHOTOWORKS
February 8, 2020 - April 25, 2020
I have always considered myself a multi-media artist, having worked as a jazz musician and photographer, and trained as a sculptor, with a BA from Bristol Polytechnic and an MFA from Reading University, where I also taught fine art for many years.
The title of this show should not be taken too literally. For me, the word “sculpture” is wider than the accepted convention of an inert, solid object, made to last a thousand years. Yes, I make inert objects too, but they are informed by the temporal nature of an improvised guitar solo, or the fortune and timing of photographic exploration. In another life, perhaps, I would have been a theatre-set designer, and some of this work echoes that. Nothing is set in stone and is dismantled when its job is done.
And so this recent work integrates photography with installations that are specifically intended to be temporary. The photowork is the residual evidence of creative thought and construction, and a valid artwork in itself, with a new layer of meaning.
I like to surprise myself and avoid repetition. I make artwork to satisfy my own curiosity, and it’s a pleasing bonus if a viewer responds too.
